Magi Gifts For Me

Today (January 7th, 2018) is the Feast of the Epiphany, and there are some interesting concepts we can glean from this event. I like to think of these as additional gifts from the Magi, beside the gold, frankincense, and myrrh that they brought for the baby King.

One of my favorite reflections on the Magi is that they were able to experience an encounter with Christ as a result of seeking Him. The gift for us to open is the knowledge that He is always there for us, beckoning to us (as He beckoned to the Magi with the appearance of the star), but it is up to us to take notice and to actively seek to establish and develop that personal connection.

Something else we can learn from the event of the Magi is that God tends to manifest his actions amongst us humans on earth in unexpected ways. In this instance, the Magi would have expected to find the baby King in Jerusalem, as it was the capital city of Israel and the most likely place for the birth of a great king of the Jews, but as we know they found Him in a stable, in the quiet and modest town of Bethlehem, lying in a manger. The earth-changing event of the birth of the Savior of the world occurred in a quiet and unpretentious way (aside from the angels who apparently created all kinds of racket within earshot of the shepherds!), and was marked in the heavens by a sign that almost everyone missed, or chose to dismiss.

But the Magi didn’t miss it, and they didn’t dismiss it. They recognized that this was the beginning of something revolutionary!

Of course, this isn’t the first time that God did something revolutionary in an unexpected way (just look at Abraham and Sarah – they had their son Isaac way past their child-bearing years!), and it won’t be the last.

The gift for us to open here is the concept of trusting that God loves us and is always working FOR us, although it might not happen in the way we expect, and we might initially not recognize it as a result. God can take the most troubling problem, or heartache, or suffering, and turn it into an amazing blessing, ultimately giving us the tools and the grace to lead us, and possibly even others, to eternal salvation.

If we keep trusting in Him, and looking in those unexpected places, we will undoubtedly encounter Him and truly experience the hope, joy, and peace that will always come with inviting the Lord into our lives and our hearts!
